The Flat Weave

Full-size towel. Small fold. The weave is what makes the difference between the two.

The difference starts with the weave. A Rag is woven flat, without the raised loops that give a terry towel its plush pile. You still get a full-size cotton towel, just without the thick fold that takes up the bag.

Each Rag is hand-loomed in Kayseri, Turkey, from Turkish cotton. Open it out and you have 40 × 70 inches to use. Roll it up and the flat weave leaves more room for the rest of the day’s gear.

Between swims.

Spread it out for a spot on the sand, then dry off after a swim. When you head back to the water, hang the Rag in the open air. The cotton dries quickly, ready to come back into the day.

When it’s time to go, lift the Rag and shake off the sand before you fold or roll it. No elaborate packing routine. Just a full-size towel that’s easy to bring along.

Full size where you need it. Small fold when you don’t.

You can feel the flat weave at the market table or get a closer look online. For washing and drying, follow the care label supplied with your Rag.

What is a Turkish beach towel?

A Turkish beach towel is a flat-woven towel rather than a towel with a raised terry pile. For Salt Rag, that means Turkish cotton, hand-loomed in Kayseri, Turkey. The weave is the practical distinction: you get a full-size towel without a thick fold. It can dry you off after a swim, spread out on the sand and roll back into your bag.

Turkish cotton and flat weave are different things

Cotton describes the material; flat weave describes the construction. A towel described as Turkish cotton is not necessarily flat woven. Terry towels have raised loops that create their plush surface, while a Rag is woven flat without that pile. Neither construction is automatically right for everyone. Choose the texture and fold you prefer, rather than relying on the word Turkish alone.

What to check before buying

Start with the listed material, open dimensions and weave. Check whether the photographs show the actual item you are choosing, then read the current product description and availability. Each Salt Rag measures 40 × 70 inches. Our editorial photographs show Rags in use; the shop's product photographs and catalog details identify the particular color and pattern you can order.

Is a Turkish towel good for the beach?

A flat-woven Rag dries quickly and allows sand to shake off before you pack it. It is still a cotton towel, not a promise of a completely sand-free day. If your priority is a plush, cushioned towel, the flatter texture will feel different. If your priority is taking a full-size cotton towel in a compact fold, the weave is worth a closer look.
