Why a Rag

A beach towel, minus the bulk.

You don’t need a thick towel to claim a spot on the sand. A Rag gives you 40 × 70 inches of Turkish cotton, with a small fold for everything that comes after.

What a Rag does

  • Blue patterned Salt Rag hanging over a bicycle on the beach.
    01

    Sand shakes off

Give it a shake before you roll it up, so you can head home with a little less beach in your bag.

  • Blue and pink striped Salt Rag hanging from a waterfront tree.
    02

    Dries quickly

Another swim shouldn’t mean another towel. Hang your Rag in the open air; the flat weave dries quickly between uses.

    03

    Packs small

Full-size where you need it. Compact when you don’t. Fold or roll it into your bag and keep room for the rest of the day’s gear.

The difference is in the weave.

Flat-woven cotton, not a thick layer of loops. That’s how a full 40 × 70-inch towel can roll down small enough to come along.

Terry towel
Ordinary terry towels get their plush surface from raised loops of yarn.
Rag
Woven flat, without the raised loops. A full-size cotton towel with a compact fold, rather than the plush pile of terry.

  1. Weave. Turkish cotton, woven flat for a towel that dries quickly and packs small.

  2. Label. The sewn Salt Rag label stays with the cloth when the paper wrap comes off.

  3. Fringe. Knotted fringe finishes both short ends—a detail worth leaving out over a chair.

Hung, draped, left out

Good color. Useful cloth.

Choose the pattern you like. Keep reaching for the towel that dries quickly, packs small and doesn’t need a special occasion to come along.

On the boat

Less bulk on board.

Save the space for the day’s gear. A Rag rolls small, opens to a full-size towel and dries quickly when you hang it out between swims.

  • A blue and red Salt Rag rolled on a white boat deck with its label and fringe visible.
    Full towel. Small roll.
  • A rolled pink Salt Rag leaning against a boat’s outboard motor.
    A spare worth packing.
  • A blue geometric Salt Rag draped over the side of a boat, with cream fringe hanging free.
    Quick to dry between dips.
  • A blue patterned Salt Rag rolled on a dock beside fishing boats.
Ready before you leave the dock.

At home

Good color stays out.

The Rag doesn’t retire when you get home. Use the flat-woven cotton as a light throw or bring a little color to a table. A beach towel can have an inside life, too.

    An easy change of color.
  • A blue and pale teal Salt Rag draped over a blue sofa beside a sunny window.
    From beach bag to sofa.
