Read the Rag

The weave, the fringe and the color you choose. A few details worth knowing before you pick your Rag.

Pink cotton weave, Salt Rag label and knotted fringe against beach sand.

A good pattern catches your eye. The cloth is what you’ll use. Before choosing a Rag, get to know both: full-size Turkish cotton, a flat weave that packs small, and color you can take beyond the beach bag.

Start with the cloth.

Each Rag is hand-loomed in Kayseri, Turkey, from Turkish cotton. It’s woven flat rather than with the raised loops of a terry towel. That construction gives you a full-size towel without the bulky fold; knotted fringe finishes the ends.

Choose a pattern you want to open.

At 40 × 70 inches, there’s more to a Rag than the stripe you see in a roll. Look at the whole design before choosing. At the market, ask to unfold one and compare a few side by side.

Think about where you’ll use it: a color you’ll spot in the boat bag, a pattern you’ll leave over a chair, or simply the one you like best. It doesn’t have to match the rest of your gear.

A screen is a starting point; getting your hands on the cotton is another way to choose. Browse the current online collection or check the market schedule if you’d rather feel the cloth in person.
