Turkish Towel vs Terry Towel: Which for the Beach?

Here's the honest version of the Turkish towel vs terry towel for the beach question: neither one wins at everything. Terry is the thick, loopy towel most of us grew up with. A Turkish towel is woven flat. Both are cotton, and both will dry you off. Where they split is everything around the drying: how much room they take in the bag, what happens to the sand, how they hang between swims and how they feel on your skin.

Turkish towel vs terry towel for the beach: the short answer

If the towel travels (beach bag, boat, truck bed, pool tote), a flat-woven Turkish towel usually earns its spot. It opens full size and packs small. If the towel stays home on a hook and its main job is a soft, thick wrap after a hot shower, terry is hard to beat.

Plenty of homes end up with both. That's fine. The trick is not sending the bath towel to the beach.

Flat weave vs raised loops, in one line

Terry gets its plush surface from raised loops of yarn; a Turkish towel is woven flat, without them. That's the whole construction story, and we've told it properly in how a flat weave is made. Everything below is about what that difference means on an actual day.

The beach bag test

Try this at home. Fold a big terry beach towel the way you'd pack it, drop it in your beach bag and see what's left. In a lot of bags, not much. The sunscreen moves to a side pocket, the water bottle rides on the outside and the snacks get squashed.

A Rag is a full 40 × 70 inches open. Because it's flat-woven instead of a thick layer of loops, it folds or rolls small enough to share the bag with the rest of the day. That matters most when you're carrying everything in one trip: down the boardwalk, over the dune, from the truck to the sand with a cooler in the other hand.

To be fair, terry's bulk isn't all downside. It's padding. Thrown over a hard pool chair, it's a cushion. But if you've ever left the towel in the car because the bag wouldn't zip, you already know which one you'd rather carry. For fold-versus-roll tips, see Packing Light.

Sand at the end of the day

Sand gets on every towel. The real question is how much of it leaves when you ask it to.

Terry's pile gives sand plenty of places to settle, and the grains that work into the loops tend to ride home with you: into the bag, onto the car seat, across the hallway floor. A flat weave gives sand less to hold onto. Lift a Rag by two corners, give it a snap downwind and most of it goes back to the beach.

Most, not all. It's still a cotton towel, not a promise of a completely sand-free day. Wet sand sticks to everything, so let damp patches dry before you shake.

Between swims

This is where a beach day really tests a towel. You dry off, sit a while, go back in, come out again. A thick terry towel holds on to that first swim, and by the third you're drying off with something that's already damp.

Hang a Rag over the chair back or the umbrella pole while you're in the water and the flat weave dries quickly in the open air. How quickly depends on the day. Humidity, wind, shade and how soaked it got all have a say, and a sticky summer afternoon is still a sticky summer afternoon. But a flat cloth gives the air far less to work through than a dense pile.

Where terry still wins

Here's the part a towel company might skip: terry feels plush. Those loops make a soft, thick, cushy towel, and stepping out of a hot shower into one is a good thing.

A flat weave feels different. It's lighter and smoother, closer to a good cotton shirt than a bathrobe. Some people take to it right away. Others miss the fluff.

Terry also makes sense when bulk costs you nothing: the towel on the bathroom hook, the stack in the hall closet, the one over a padded lounger that never leaves the backyard. If the towel isn't going anywhere, pack size barely matters.

So if plush is the priority, keep the terry. If you want a full-size towel that's easy to bring along, the weave is worth a closer look. There's more on that in Why a Rag.

Pick by where the towel lives

A quick picker for the "Turkish towel or terry towel" question:

  • Beach: Turkish towel. It packs small, sand shakes off and it doubles as your spot on the sand.
  • Boat: Turkish towel. Storage is tight, and a towel you can hang out to dry between swims beats a soggy heap under the console.
  • Pool: Either. If you're on a lounger all afternoon, terry's padding is nice. If the pool is one stop in a longer day, the Rag is easier to carry.
  • Travel: Turkish towel. You get one full-size towel that doesn't take over the bag. More in Packing Light.
  • Bathroom: Terry, if you like plush. A Rag works fine on a hook, but this is terry's home turf.

FAQ

Are Turkish towels better than regular towels? For carrying to the beach, the boat or the pool, often yes: a flat weave packs small and dries quickly. For a plush feel at home, terry is the better pick. "Better" depends on the job.

Is a Turkish towel as big as a beach towel? A Salt Rag is 40 × 70 inches open, about 102 × 178 cm. It's full size. It just folds smaller.

Does it feel like a terry towel? No. It's flatter and lighter, with no loops. To feel one before you decide, look for the blue tent at our regular market stops. Check the dates and @salt.rag before you go.

What is a Salt Rag made of? Turkish cotton, flat-woven and hand-loomed in Kayseri, Turkey.

What if the flat weave isn't for me? We accept eligible returns requested within 30 days after delivery, as long as the Rag is unused, unwashed and in its original condition. See the returns policy, and find more answers in the FAQ.

Find your Rag

If your towel mostly lives in a beach bag, start with stripes. The Tidemark Rag (Black) has black stripes on a cream base. The Ahi Rag (Turquoise) is bright turquoise with warm woven stripes. Or shop the Rags to see every color in stock, and if the whole crew is coming, build a stack.
